Pavel Opočenský is a master at transforming materials, and Bakelitomanie chronicles his obsession with bakelite. Taking found fragments or components made of bakelite, he makes small changes and creates pieces of jewellery, mainly brooches, detached from their original context and yet still loaded with their functional past life.

Bakelitomanie was published to accompany Opočenský’s exhibition of the same name held at Galerie Biró Kunstoff Schmuck in Munich in 1997, Galerie Ra in Amsterdam in 1998, jewelerswerk galerie in Washington in 1998 and Galerie Kotelna in Prague in 1998. With Text by Maria-Bettina Eich.
