Genevieve Howard - The Dawn Chorus

The Dawn Chorus is a deeply personal exploration of the delicate interplay between nature, sound, form and material. Rooted in my Irish heritage and shaped by my dual practice as both musician and visual artist, this exhibition brings together sculptural jewellery, birdsong and live performance in a multi-sensory experience that seeks to slow us down and draw us back into rhythm with the natural world.
Inspired by the fleeting beauty of early morning birdsong, each piece in the exhibition translates this sound—captured from my own environment—into sculptural form. My hope is that viewers experience a sense of stillness and connection through the work, giving shape to something usually intangible. In Irish folklore, birds are seen as messengers between worlds, and in this exhibition, they represent that threshold—between what is seen and unseen, heard and felt.
Through a fusion of traditional handcraft and experimental digital techniques, I strive to create jewellery that bridges the visible and the invisible and the material and the emotional. These pieces are wearable representations of nature—bridging the body and the world around us. Shaped by the sounds of birdsong and the rhythms of the landscape, they carry a quiet echo of the natural world, allowing the wearer to carry a piece of nature’s song with them.
At the opening of The Dawn Chorus, a live harp performance—interwoven with field recordings of birdsong—brings the space to life, creating a moment where music, movement, and form converge. Throughout the exhibition, a sound piece will accompany the works, weaving birdsong and harp into a continuous thread, further immersing visitors in the experience. This exhibition invites you to listen closely, to feel deeply, and to reconnect with the quiet rhythms of nature, offering a gentle reminder to attune ourselves to the music that surrounds us in the world.
