Shin Hea-Lim describes her work as a process of accumulating and abstracting organic matter. She makes pieces in rolled and manipulated fine linen, creating tactile, three-dimensional layers of texture and colour which she describes as ornaments of time. Metals often completely disappear from view as she battles to free herself from the boundaries of contemporary jewellery. This complex emotional struggle is expressed through the simplicity of her work and takes inspiration from the principles of the American Minimalist movement.
Born in Seoul in South Korea in 1971, Shin Hea-Lim studied as both an undergraduate and a postgraduate in metal craft at Kookmin University. Graduating in 2004, she has since exhibited internationally and has work in the collection of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in the Korean city of Gwacheon.
