CARMEN VOLLEBERGH
THE NETHERLANDS, MAASTRICHT
MAFAD (MAASTRICHT ACADEMY OF FINE ART AND DESIGN)
The philosophy behind my work is based in the material itself. For me, material is valuable because of its aesthetic qualities, not because of convention and association. Because I often use non-precious materials like tin and bismuth, ‘value’ and ‘valuation’ are recurring themes in my work. For this collection I questioned jewellery as a theme in itself. What gives jewellery its value? And what remains when its material is revalued or even replaced? My research is driven by the context of history, leading me to examine the artefacts we call ‘jewellery’. Thus, each of my forms has a different story, cultural background and personal association. With time they have merged, and will merge in the future, creating new values and new contexts.
