MARA BALODE (MFA)
ROYAL ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS ANTWERP
My central subjects are light and memory and the exploration and development of new materials. Light is an innately broad topic, so I focus on reflection, colour and time, with the aim of ‘preserving’ light. I also consider perception and how we recall events, exploring both voluntary and involuntary memory. Directed by the intellect and influenced by mood and context, I look at how we commonly remember events as ‘snapshots’. I use drawing and photography to preserve light’s poetic vocabulary. Each collection symbolises many aspects that are linked with a particular memory. Combining three-dimensional aluminium forms with the newly found material ‘composite silk’, I depict narratives driven by light, manipulating it through them.
