Bewilder
I am fascinated by the friction between existing societal norms and our intimate inner lives as individuals. I aim to create works that bewilder, using a contradiction of logic in function in association with the physical senses. In this series, archetypes that reference societal roles are transformed to express individual tensions with that norm. I transform fresh ginger into a sensuous and malleable patchwork lace, using embroidery techniques and a domestic oven. Cut, stitch, heat, repeat. The end result of this repetitive process offers touch sensations of soft and hard in addition to a strong, immediate, and triggering smell. I manipulate our cultural tropes by using a combination of individual material elements that arrive at ‘completion’ like pieces of a puzzle.
