Through a series of short stories, Barbara Schmidt investigates 25 or so reasons why we humans wear jewellery. The discovery of ancient jewellery in Blombos Cave in South Africa led archaeologist Marian Vanhaeren to identify 14 reasons why they were worn – from amulet to object for counting, and Schmidt adds her own thoughts to the list – jewellery as humour, jewellery as a tool.

Beautifully illustrated with contemporary jewellery objects, Schmidt’s book is a visual feast and an inventive and insightful way to approach the conversation around jewellery and our deep-rooted desire for adornment.
