Dominik Cunningham (1998) is from San Antonio, Texas, U.S.A. He received his BA in Jewelry Design from Central Saint Martins in London, U.K. He has won a series of awards during his time at Central Saint Martins including the Theo Fennell Award for Best Design (2022), the Swarovski Foundation Scholarship (2022), and the Marzee Graduate Prize (2022).
Statement:
My work is primarily centered around my relationship to the concept of the black & queer gaze, and how my interpretation of those abstract ideas form my worldview. I create work by utilizing a personal compendium of references and experiences, all of which culminates in wearable objects that demonstrate a dynamic understanding of my own perspective. I believe that my utilization of the queer and black gaze allows for a greater scope of realizations to be made from the world, rather than what might be perceived as a narrowing of vision.
