Christiaan Lebens’ brooches are inspired by human skin. Many people wish to change their skin, in order to stay young or to remove imperfections. That part of the body is then changed, due to natural as well as artificial processes. Jewellery can also be used to change the appearance of the body, and it is often worn very close to the skin. One brooch, with knitted pearls, was treated with sandpaper, as if it were skin that has been scrubbed. The interior of the pearls have been exposed as a result. A second brooch is literally made from skin (leather) which he boiled while it was placed on the hand of a plastic mannequin. In this way real animal skin has taken the form of an artificial body.
