Carla Nuis

Carla Nuis draws inspiration for her jewellery from many places – from childhood drawings to ornamental wallpaper patterns, and classic retail jewellery chains to pearl necklaces. Since her MPhil studies at the Royal College of Art in London (graduation 2005), Carla has explored the possibilities of paper-thin hollow forms in gold and silver. Etched or cut with scissors from metal sheet, shaped and laser-welded, these meticulous constructions deceive the eye, appearing simple, solid and heavy where they are in fact complex, hollow, fragile and light. Her latest collection is in fruit-wood.

Carla, born in Barendrecht in the Netherlands in 1970, studied Goldsmithing at Vakschool Schoonhoven (graduation 1991) and the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts & Design (graduation 1995), before joining RCA. Her work is exhibited internationally, privately collected and held in a number of public collections, including the Marzee Collection, Museum Arnhem, CODA Museum and Design Museum Den Bosch in the Netherlands, as well as the Victoria & Albert Museum and the RCA collection in London. Carla’s work is widely published and won various prizes, including the RCA Nicole Stöber Memorial Award 2005, the Marzee Graduation Prize 2005, the Dutch Design Award 2006, and the Herbert Hofmann Prize at Schmuck in Munich in 2020.
